Designed for Thrive Creative and Communication, the Yukon Kuskokwim Health Corporation's Diabetes Prevention and Control program logo fuses the the traditional symbols of subsistence with the modern universal symbol, the blue circle, of diabetes. The logo is deceptively simple, working both from a distance and up close in different ways.
Tasked with designing a brand that would speak to young people and appeal to their heritage, we started with research, learning about the people of the Yukon Kuskokwim Delta and the plants and animals they would come across in daily life. The movement of the logo hearkens to the lifestyle approach that must be taken for prevention and management of type I and II diabetes. Closely connected with the land, a traditional subsistence diet is one of the strongest methods of addressing the risks and side-effects. After iterations of sketches, we settled on salmon, geese and berries as the primary subjects.
